When do kids start learning how to write properly?
My son is four and can write about half the alphabet legibly can write simple words (cat, mom, dog, happy, etc.) but they are huge and he cannot write within the confines of the writing lines. I can't find in the core curriculum guides for my state when they actually learn how to write and if he is behind or not.

He is learning to write if he can write those words. That is really good that he is only four and can write all those words. Four year olds do not have well-developed fine motor skills yet. That is why it is so hard for them to color in the lines or tie their shoes but they can run or kick a ball easily. It's been my experience that the fine motor skills start to develop around 6-8 years old. Keep practicing with your son and his handwriting will naturally get better as time goes on.

you are confusing writing with manual dexterity…….. He can form proper shapes, now all he needs to learn is how to control the size……
at age 4, he is fine.
4-5 Theyre learning
5-6 They should know most if not all of the alphabet and handwriting should improve slightly
6-9 Handwriting should be regular sized should know all alphabet.
Hes doing pretty gewd. :D
He’s on track, don’t worry.
Children who are around 7 begin to write neatly, in a line and are capable of making very accurate attempts at sounding out/spelling complex words.
