Isn't it funny to see people so shocked at the idea of kids learning a different language?
I thought learning was a good thing.
Most other countries teach foreign languages in elementary school, and it makes sense because that's when they are able to pick up languages the fastest. I taught English to kids in Taiwan who were 6 years old, and not only did they take English classes, they learned French and Japanese in addition to their native languages of Mandarin and Taiwanese!

Yes, although Americans have traditionally been isolationists.

I think its hillarious-it just goes to show how arrogant some Americans are….gasp, we should learn more?

  2. ducky

conservatives don’t want their kids to know more than they do.

    Yes

  4. Ghost of Eugene Debs

It is funny because they apparently are ignoring all the changes America has been going through, what with jobs being shipped overseas and whatnot. They don’t realize that Americans have to compete with people from everywhere else for their jobs, now. They can refuse to learn another language if they want, but their job prospects are not going to look very good.

Not only shocked–they adamantly oppose it! Kind of disappointing, but not surprising.

  6. Bubba Christ The Resurrected

I have no problem with me or my kids learning other languages. My problem is with elitists telling me I need to as well as telling me which ones.

  7. malclave

    Who is “shocked”?

I think you’re just seeing what you want to see, regardless of facts… which would be funny (as you suggest) if it wasn’t sad.

  8. Zogtastic

I’ve just started learning German and Swedish.

Regardless of how old you get, people should never stop learning. I just wish I was taught foreign languages more when I was younger.

  9. Susan J Undecided Independent

I think it is a good idea to speak other languages. I can not. My husband speaks German and Japanese. My daughter speaks Spanish fairly well. Me, I am doing well to function in English.

It’s a shame and ridiculous to not make learning a foreign language a requirement. I guess we’re afraid our kids will talk about us in front of us and we won’t know what they’re saying.

I agree to learn other lanuages gets you ahead these days beside the world is a massive culture pot that allows u to interact more easily and to bridge the gap and obtain a new level of comfort, friends and career if u do learn.

I am not questioning the idea of a child learning other languages, but it is a parenting decision, not a government one.
Oh so the thumbs down mean you think the government should tell you what languages your child should be taught?

  13. speckofdust

Most people realize that Obama is right regarding the current “controversy”. Conservative spin of Obama’s statements isn’t going to work well except with people who want their children to be ignorant/stupid. That isn’t a large group.

  14. LovingLife

I know right. People seem to forget that alternate languages are taught in schools everyday across the nation. Obama makes mention of it, and all of the sudden it’s new and BAD. It used to be a thing of prestige to speak multiple languages.

The study of forgeign languages is just not encouraged in this country. Perhaps it’s because we think that the whole world should speak English. Perhaps we are not inquisitive enough to learn other languages because we’re not interested in the cultures of other nations and peoples. Either way, we’re the ones who lose out. I am very happy that I learned a foreign language. It opened my mind to the fact that the US is not the center of everything.

  16. Tracey Seth

    It’s not about learning anything.

It’s about accomidating a segment of people in the US who are mostly here illegally and being demanded to accomidate them while ignoring the immigration laws on the books.

Why can’t you people get that? You are totally missing the point.

I think a child should be offered as before the chance to learn by their choice not forced on them by a bunch of Illegals that chose to run our soverien boarders. If I chose to go live in Mexico I would understand I would have to learn spanish. Our children arent even being taught the standards well enough in this country why would you choose to slow them down more with adding another language?

  19. blackcat

You are absolutely correct, but I was taken aback when Obama said he was “embarrassed” for us.
I lived in other countries and learned the language, but most of the ten or so I visited I didn’t.
I’m more concerned that we need to print voter ballots and college enrollment applications in languages other than English. I think you already know the most common foreign language taught in other countries is English.

  20. vee ann

    i think that’s good.
i’m Vietnamese and i’ve been learning English since i was 12 in middle school.
some of teenagers nowaday are really good in English, or the other foreign language. but i hate the way they’re talking foreign language all the time instead of their own language, and they think that’s cool.

  21. poopykins81

I think it’s great for kids to learn new languages, I took 2 years of french in high school and I want my kids to have the right to pick what language they want to learn. I mean, shouldn’t the illegal immigrants and all the other spanish speaking people have to learn to speak english, why should we have to cater to their needs when they’re in our country that is english speaking. If my kids want to learn a language, I hope it’s japanese bc they’re a strong growing country.

  22. Jeff B

America is a fascist country who believes America is about staying ENGLISH. We must wipe out anything that resembles differences.

  23. ragdoll

It would be great if children would learn a second language, but which one? America is a land of many different immigrants. Who gets to decide which one a child should learn? Obama mentioned Spanish, is this because he is so pro-illegal immigration? Is it because we are being invaded by Spanish speaking illegals that refuse to learn English? Why not Chinese? We owe China enough money that maybe we should learn their language. How about sign language? Maybe everyone should learn that instead, considering the fact that it will be more difficult for a deaf person to learn other languages.
I think that Obama is showing his elitist side again. I am not poor, but I have never been to another country and don’t know many people who have. I’m having trouble traveling to the next town with the high price of gas.

  24. Tim

Learning is a good thing, which is why people who come to the US should learn English. When I lived in Italy, I did not expect the Italians to learn English just to accomidate me. What I object to is Obama instisting Americans should learn Spanish in order to accomidate Mexicans coming into this country, mostly illegally.

Also, English is the international language of commerce. Every pilot and air traffic controller speaks it. Almost every product sold on the world market includes English in things such as instructions.

  25. nursekat

I don’t think that people are “shocked” about the idea of kids learning a new language……
I believe it is because of the way this was presented as if they were going to HAVE TO learn another language to make it better for non-Americans living in America (legally or otherwise). It was the impression that WE had to change the way we are to accommodate, change our ways to suit others- that, I think, is what gets people in an uproar. Part of which I can understand…As they say, “when in Rome, do as the Romans do”. There IS a reason people come to America in the first place if they are not from here. They want to come here because of the way it IS. If they wanted it to be the same as their own country, wouldn’t they have stayed there? And if they want it to change it to be like their own country, but with our privileges, don’t you find that, well, wrong? This is what I am hearing from some people. Also, talk of changing things that are part of our history, that made us America, and defines who we are still today, now someone wants to come along and “re-write”/edit this because it might offend someone of a different nationality that is now in America??? WTH??? I’ve heard this complaint voiced alot! Don’t agree at all with this one.
But,back to the original question, I think the presentation was poor, I don’t think anybody is against their children learning. But, I think the same goes for “foreigners” coming to America…should learn English as well, don’t you think?
