Principal thinks my kid has learning disability. Is this true?
We had a conference on Friday, and according to my daughters state standards test scores, she is off the charts. How can she have a learning disability if her test scores are so advanced?

I had the same thing. I always score 95%+ on the test scores but was incredibly dyslexic. It still affects me with spelling and handwriting to this day (even after years of handwriting therapy). It's absolutely possible.

Standardized test scores are only one way of measuring a person’s “intelligence.” If your daughter’s principal took the trouble to inform you that she suspects a learning disability, it seems like something worth investigating.

Unless your kid’s principal has a PhD in Child Psychology, he does not have the power to diagnose your child. He may see signs of a learning disability, but only a Psychologist/Psychiatrist can diagnose.

If you want to have your child tested, you can go to your school district and ask to make an appointment with the school psychologist. They will be able to test and diagnose your child…and will arrange any resources your child should need if they are diagnosed with a learning disorder.

Could be , a learning disability does not mean a child is dumb, it means they learn differently.People with normal and above average intelligence can have learning disability. When I was in school I had an emotional impairment.

I would not listen to what they say until you you get your own psychologist. They may be using this as a way to cast out your child for whatever other reason.Check into this thoroughly. If there is another motive behind this , then take her out of said school. You should have choices , I know that where I live we do.

Stop believing charts, and statistics. It is unfortunate that the society we live in comes up with labels that actually do more harm than good. I know many students who have been diagnosed with a “disability”, that tests off the chart.

A disability, for the most part, doesn’t mean that they are not capable of doing the work, only that they process differently. It would do you well to investigate the possibility if you are finding your child struggling in an area.

For example, one of my greatest joys was teaching a man who was Dyslexic. He was in the top percentile of my class, but needed a little extra time to read his work on exams. He told me of his disability, (in which he grew up ashamed), and I worked with him. No special treatments. Just gave open ended exams where students were not on a time frame. (Actually, I only had to give about 1/2 hour of extra time for him.) Twice he finished before half of the class.

It’s called dyslexia (i don’t know how to write the correct one) but it can be true, you can test your daughter by giving her an article and see if your daughter can’t understand easily than your daughter is having that learning disability..
